Sunday, July 5th, 2020I worked long and hard trying to capture the moment of this July 4th.  Instead, I offer a quote from historian Jon Meacham: “To know what has come before us is to be armed against despair.
If the men and women of the past, with all their flaws and limitations and ambitions and appetites, could press on through ignorance and superstition, racism and sexism, selfishness and greed, to create a freer, stronger nation, then perhaps, we, too, can right the wrongs and take another step forward toward that most enchanting and elusive destination: a more perfect union”.
We are living through a moment of history.
A Pandemic, a roiling economy and the quest for a more equitable country.  More often than not, our history takes us to a better place.
But remember our democracy was always a grand experiment.
It is messy, full of egregious wrongs.  Yet, it is up to each one of us, extending a hand to all of our neighbors – those who look like us and those who don’t – to continue this journey to a “more perfect union”.
That is a message of hope for this July 4th.
